LLMs Drive Optimism for Humanoid Robots

At the recent World Robots Conference in Beijing, excitement surged around humanoid robots as various prototypes captured attention. However, Xi Ning, chair professor of robotics and automation at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), cautioned that practical deployment for household chores is still far off. He emphasized that many humanoids are still under development and face significant technological challenges.

During the expo, domestic robotics firms exhibited a variety of humanoids engineered for tasks like playing Chinese instruments and stocking shelves. However, Xi noted the complexities involved in programming humanoids for undefined tasks in uncertain settings. Traditional industrial robots, designed for specific tasks, contrast sharply with the multifunctional expectations of humanoid robots.

Technological Challenges Ahead

  • Complex programming issues persist, causing hurdles in task planning for humanoid robots.
  • LLMs show potential for improving programming efficiency but have limitations.

Despite these challenges, Xi remains optimistic. He expects humanoids to be utilized in high-stakes sectors like aerospace, security, and defense first, given the reduced emphasis on cost. He believes that while fears of robots displacing jobs are prevalent, the economic landscape will adjust accordingly by the time humanoids become widespread.

“An immediate problem may resolve itself in the future as labour markets adapt,” he stated, reiterating the long-term potential of humanoid robots.
