US Liquor Exports to Canada Plummet by 85 Percent Amid Ongoing Trade Tensions

US Liquor Exports Declined Sharply
US liquor exports to Canada saw a staggering decline of 85 percent in the second quarter of 2025, as revealed by the latest Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS) report. Exports plummeted to $9.6 million, down from $63.1 million during the same period in 2024.
Impact of Trade Tensions on Spirits Market
Ongoing trade conflicts have been a significant factor in this drastic decrease. President Trump implemented a 35 percent tariff on Canadian goods, which has been met with counter tariffs from Canada, although these were mostly lifted on September 1. Despite this, most provinces in Canada continue to restrict American spirits from their markets.
Overall, the US spirits exports dwindled by 9 percent year over year, with total exports falling from $651 million in Q2 2024 to $593.6 million in Q2 2025. Notably, exports to the EU and UK also experienced declines of 12 percent and 29 percent, respectively.
Concerns remain high as DISCUS President Chris Swonger cautioned that ongoing trade tensions might lead consumers to favor domestically produced or non-US alternatives, urging the administration to return to zero-for-zero tariffs to restore stability in exports.
