Gaming News: Subset Games Brings Fulcrum Defender to Playdate

During a recent Playdate Update livestream on Thursday, Panic revealed exciting plans for a second season of games for its unique black and white portable console, the Playdate. Among the highlights is a new title from Subset Games, known for their popular titles FTL: Faster than Light and Into the Breach.

Fulcrum Defender is a captivating single-screen defense game that challenges players to use the crank to fend off relentless attacks, drawing inspiration from games like Vampire Survivors. In a statement during the livestream, Subset Games' Jay Ma explained his creative vision: "I wanted to create a replayable experience that begins slowly and transforms into frantic chaos." Jay also shared that the game stemmed from a personal journey during his struggles with long COVID, making it a labor of love.

Anticipation for Season 2

Season 2 of Playdate will kick off on May 29, releasing two new games each week over a period of six weeks, available for just $39. Players can look forward to a diverse lineup, including the platformer Taria & Como, the adventure game Shadowgate PD, and the digging game Dig Dig Dino!. Additionally, there will be a surprise release for gamers seeking something a little different.

The first season of Playdate, which launched with the console in 2022, included 24 games, such as Crankin's Time Travel Adventure, created by Katamari Damacy's Keita Takahashi, and Whitewater Wipeout by Chuhai Labs. Panic also shared that they have sold over 289,000 games through the Playdate Catalog, amounting to more than a million dollars for developers. The company recently gained attention after sharing an intriguing story about hiring a private detective to recover stolen consoles.
