Ghost of Yotei is a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima; however, the newer game takes place 300 years after the events of the first game. Furthermore, it features a new protagonist named Atsu, so expect a fresh new story. However, if you really want to get yourself into the universe of Sucker Punch's game, it's best that you play the earlier game.

But again, there is no mandate to play the first game to understand the story of the second, as it is a new original story. So, you can safely play the newer release without knowing anything about the original game.

What Is the Plot of Ghost of Yotei?

Ghost of Yotei is a completely original story that takes place around the Yotei mountain. Just like Ghost of Tsushima, which takes on historical moments, Sucker Punch introduced a similar kind of twist with the upcoming game. While the first game was about reclaiming the land from the Mongol Empire, the second game is all about underdog vengeance. The protagonist, Atsu, loses her clan after an attack from a ferocious bandit gang.

Atsu, the sole survivor, embarks on a vengeance journey to avenge her fallen clan by killing Lord Saito. But not only him, Atsu also seeks the soul of the Yotei Six, who were part of the slaughtering of her family. While Jin Sakai was a samurai, Atsu is an Onna-musha warrior who also takes the name of Onryo, meaning vengeful spirit.
