PhonePe Prepares for Public Offering

PhonePe is eyeing a $10.5 billion valuation for its upcoming IPO, depending on the evolving geopolitical situation. Analysts suggest that the Bengaluru-based fintech aims to raise between $900 million and $1.5 billion through this public listing, which is solely an offer-for-sale component.

Current Financial Landscape

While PhonePe has raised nearly $2.3 billion thus far, it will not be raising new funds via the IPO, instead providing liquidity to selling stakeholders, including Walmart, which is reducing its stake by approximately 12%.

  • Walmart remains the majority shareholder post-IPO
  • Tiger Global and Microsoft are exiting their positions in PhonePe
  • Other investors like General Atlantic Singapore will stay on the cap table

Market Position and Challenges

Although PhonePe has captured nearly 46.6% of the UPI payments market in India as of January, concerns linger regarding its monetization strategies. The company posted a 20% year-over-year loss, while operating revenue climbed by 22% to ₹3,918.5 Cr.

  1. Consumer and merchant payments account for 63.8% and 21.8% of total revenue, respectively.
  2. Lending and insurance distribution contribute just 6.3% to revenue.

Analysts believe that merchant payments can be significantly more lucrative for PhonePe than consumer segments, presenting better monetization avenues.

Future Implications for PhonePe

With an eye on profitability, all analysts are keenly watching PhonePe's differentiation from competitors like Paytm as it heads into the public markets.
