Missoula's National Conference on Housing Health and Community Well-being

Missoula Hosts a Conference on Housing Health
Missoula is hosting a national conference centered on improving the health of communities across the country. Program director of Social Determinants of Health Jennifer Fassbender shared, “We have selected the 50 cities in 2016 that we're working with. They're all small to mid-size cities across the country. Missoula being one of them, and today we brought together 12 of those cities to the Housing for All Summit that our Missoula team is leading.”
Unique Challenges for Mid-Sized Cities
Leaders from Missoula and other partner communities are discussing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by mid-sized cities. Jennifer Palmer, director of housing and homeless services, stated, “One of the things I have loved about my experience with Invest Health is finding how many other small and mid-size cities deal with so many of these same issues, but everybody's tackling them in different ways. This conference allows us to learn from the community development work happening across various cities.”
Exploring the Connection Between Housing and Public Health
At the conference, attendees explored projects that showcase Missoula as a leading example of Invest Health values. A key theme emerged: the impact of housing on public health. Tracy Hightshoe, director of Neighborhood and Development Services, noted, “Recognition of how the built environment — the home — impacts your health is crucial. We aim to provide healthy homes and neighborhoods for all.”
Bringing Ideas Home
Conference leaders hope that shared insights will foster healthier communities. Hightshoe emphasized the importance of lead-free, radon-free, pest-free, and mold-free homes. She stated, “These factors are critical for better health outcomes. So, what can we do partnering together to create healthy neighborhoods where everyone thrives?”
