The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, alongside an officer from Kolkata Police for their involvement in compromising the integrity of the rape-murder investigation of a junior doctor last month.

• The CBI's actions come in response to allegations of evidence tampering and misleading investigation efforts.
• Officer Abhijit Mandal, the officer in charge of the initial investigation, faces accusations regarding delays in filing the FIR and mishandling vital evidence.

The tragic incident occurred when a 31-year-old doctor was discovered deceased in the seminar room of the hospital on August 9, leading to public protests and heightened scrutiny of the investigation.

Legal Proceedings and Community Response

Both Ghosh and Mandal are scheduled to appear before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Court in Sealdah. This comes after the recent polygraph tests conducted by the CBI on Ghosh.

As the investigation continues, the Calcutta High Court has mandated the CBI to submit a progress report by September 17, compelling the agency to maintain transparency about the investigation’s advancement.

Public Outcry

The arrests have intensified public scrutiny, particularly among medical professionals, who voiced their frustrations after protests outside of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence.
