Ernakulam District Administration's Strategic Meeting on Epidemic Control
Kochi: An interdepartment meeting was held at the civil station on Monday to intensify epidemic prevention activities and prevent the spread of communicable diseases in the district while ensuring a safe celebration of Onam. With the monsoon intensification in the district heightening the risk of zoonotic diseases, the meeting convened under the leadership of Additional District Magistrate (ADM) K Manoj, gathering officials from various departments.
Public Health Committee Meeting Insights
The assembly included discussions based on the Public Health Act, with ADM stressing the need for regular inspections in food distribution units, catering centres, and local markets throughout the Onam festivities to mitigate epidemic threats. Health department officials were directed to promote public awareness on necessary precautions against communicable diseases.
Health Advisory and Preventive Initiatives
- Residents experiencing fever are warned against self-medication and advised to seek appropriate medical care.
- Preventive medicine for leptospirosis is recommended for those in contact with soil and water.
- A boiled drinking water advisory has been issued to ensure safe consumption.
Furthermore, the meeting evaluated current sanitation and awareness campaigns by various departments. The district launched a special initiative named Ente Onam Karuthal Onam, with a campaign poster released by Manoj.
Joint Inspections and Compliance Measures
As part of this campaign, heightened scrutiny will be directed at drinking water distribution units, Onam food fests, and facilities such as orphanages and homes for the destitute. Joint inspections by the health department, food safety authorities, and local self-governance will ensure adherence to food and beverage hygiene, green protocol, and drinking water quality.
Moreover, actions against rule violations will be enforced rigorously to protect public health. Intensified public education regarding mosquito-borne disease control and leptospirosis prevention will also be implemented.
