Indian Coal Exchange Pursues Trading Licence

Indian Coal Exchange trading licence is sought by its parent company, Indian Energy Exchange (IEX), marking its entry into the coal market. On Monday, IEX announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Indian Coal Exchange Limited, has applied for a licence with the Coal Controller Organisation (CCO) to establish a coal trading exchange. The CCO serves as the regulatory authority for coal exchanges in India.

Indian Coal Exchange was incorporated on June 1 with an authorised share capital of ₹100 crore. The exchange is set to operate as a physical delivery-based coal trading platform, creating a technology-enabled marketplace to connect buyers and sellers in compliance with the Coal Exchange Rules, 2026.

Importance of Coal Trading Exchange

This exchange will facilitate coal trades at designated delivery points, which IEX emphasizes is crucial for price discovery and broadening market access. By introducing this new exchange, IEX Group aims to strengthen its presence across the energy value chain, complementing its existing electricity exchange and the Indian Gas Exchange (IGX).

IEX operates a nationwide automated trading platform for physical electricity delivery, renewable power, renewable energy certificates, and energy-saving certificates. Since its listing on the NSE and BSE in October 2017, the company has been regulated by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission.
