Major Fentanyl Bust in Suffolk County

Suffolk County officials have announced the arrest of a 43-year-old Bellport man, Remon Gibson, in connection with the largest fentanyl bust in the county's history. Authorities seized over seven kilograms of fentanyl - a cheap and potent synthetic opioid - found in a nightstand next to a child's bedroom.

Impacts of Fentanyl Seizure

According to district attorney Ray Tierney, the amount of fentanyl recovered is enough to kill every man, woman, and child on Long Island. "Gone are the days of cocaine and heroin, although they’re still out there; they’re now being mixed with more lethal lab-created drugs," Tierney stated. The operation was a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Broader Drug Crisis

  • Authorities also seized eight kilograms of cocaine and more than a pound of xylazine, a veterinary sedative.
  • A cash amount of $80,000 was also confiscated during the investigation.
  • This bust follows another seizure of carfentanil, an opioid immensely potent and known as "Super Mario" on the streets.

Community Response

Advocates warn about the rising threat these drugs pose as they infiltrate streets. Lori Carbonaro, who lost her son Nick to an overdose, expressed the need for increased measures to combat this epidemic. Law enforcement officials and community leaders vow to enhance prevention, treatment, and education programs trying to tackle this crisis.

Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds noted, "Every grain of fentanyl taken off the street translates into potentially a life that is saved," highlighting the ongoing threat of fentanyl and the collective efforts needed to address it.
