A recent survey conducted by Elon University's Imagining the Digital Future Center shows that a striking 52% of Americans reported using large language models (LLMs), including the widely recognized ChatGPT. Among these users, a diverse range of engagement frequencies emerged:

  • 5% almost constantly
  • 7% several times a day
  • 5% about once a day
  • 10% several times a week
  • 25% less often
  • 47% do not use them at all

According to the report, the growth trajectory of LLMs is historic; in just over two years, half of American adults report having used these tools. Interestingly, while comfort with AI is on the rise, a recent poll indicates that 55% of respondents are wary of the government using AI for critical decisions.

Usage Demographics and Implications

Among 500 users surveyed about their usage of LLMs, 52% utilize them for work, while 36% leverage these tools for academic purposes. The surveys conducted from January 21 to 23 also highlight the urgent need for conversations around ethical considerations of AI.
